Rain Basketball’s free youth team evaluations are open for team placement. If your 9th – 12th grade player is serious about playing college basketball, this is where their journey begins.

What to Expect at evaluations

Coaches evaluate technical skills, athleticism, basketball IQ, competitive spirit, and coachability through individual drills, team exercises, and scrimmages.

FAQs

What if my player hasn't played AAU basketball before?
Tryouts are open to all high school athletes. We evaluate based on potential, work ethic, and coachability—not just prior AAU experience. Many of our most successful players joined us with no AAU background.
Can my player try out if they're not on varsity yet?
Yes. We evaluate players for potential and development trajectory. If your player is serious about basketball and willing to work, they should try out.
What if my player can't make the scheduled tryout date?
Contact admin@rain-basketball.com as soon as possible. We may be able to arrange a makeup evaluation, but availability is limited.
Is there a tryout fee?
No. Tryouts are 100% free to attend.
Should my player attend the tryout for their grade or skill level?
Players should attend tryouts for their current grade (9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th). We form multiple teams per age group to ensure appropriate competition levels.

Team Selection FAQs

How are teams selected?
Players are evaluated on skill level, athleticism, basketball IQ, coachability, and competitive readiness. We typically form A, B, and C teams per age group so players compete at an appropriate level.
When will we find out if my player made a team?
Team placement notifications are sent via email by within 1 week of tryouts.
What if my player doesn't make a team?
We provide constructive feedback and recommendations for continued development, including our skills training programs, private coaching options, and areas to focus on for future tryouts.
Can players be moved between teams during the season?
Yes. Players who demonstrate significant improvement and readiness for higher competition can be promoted to a higher team mid-season.

Season FAQs

What's the time commitment?
Plan for 2-3 practices per week (1.5-2 hours each) plus 2 weekend tournaments per month. Total weekly commitment is 10-15 hours during tournament weekends, 5-6 hours during practice-only weeks.
Can my player play high school basketball and Rain Basketball AAU?
Absolutely. Our season is designed around high school schedules. Most tournaments occur during spring/summer when high school is in off-season.
What are the season dates?
The Spring/Summer 2026 season runs March through Late July / Early August. Practices begin early March.
How much does the season cost?
Season fees typically range from $1,500 – $2,500 depending on location and team level. This covers coaching, practices, tournament fees, insurance, and recruiting support. Uniforms, Gear, and Travel expenses (hotels, meals) are separate.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. We offer monthly payment plans and need-based financial assistance. Cost should never be a barrier for a talented, committed athlete. Contact admin@rain-basketball.com to discuss options confidentially.
What if my player has a conflict with a tournament?
We understand conflicts happen (school commitments, family obligations, emergencies). Players must communicate conflicts in advance. Repeated absences may affect playing time or roster position.

College Recruiting FAQs

Will my player definitely get recruited if they play for Rain Basketball?
Playing for Rain Basketball significantly increases recruiting exposure, but there are no guarantees. Success depends on the player’s skill development, academic eligibility, work ethic, and fit with college programs. We provide the platform, connections, and guidance—the player must execute.
When should the recruiting process start?
Ideally in 9th-10th grade. College coaches can begin contacting players after June 15 of their sophomore year (NCAA D1) or anytime (D2/D3/NAIA). We help players build recruiting profiles early so they’re ready when contact periods open.
What college divisions do Rain Basketball players typically play at?
Our players have earned scholarships and roster spots at NCAA D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and junior college programs. We help players find the right fit based on their skill level, academic profile, and personal goals.
What GPA does my player need for college basketball?
NCAA D1 requires a minimum 2.3 GPA, D2 requires 2.2 (along with specific core courses and test scores). D3 and NAIA have different standards. We provide academic eligibility guidance starting in 9th grade so players stay on track.
How does Rain Basketball help with recruiting?
We provide NCAA eligibility guidance, create professional recruiting profiles and highlight reels, make direct introductions to college coaches in our network, place players in strategic showcase tournaments, and train players on how to communicate with coaches and navigate the recruiting process.

Who are the coaches?
All Rain Basketball coaches are USA Basketball Gold Certified—the highest certification in youth basketball. Our staff includes former college players, experienced high school coaches, and coaches with proven track records developing college-bound athletes.
What's the coaching philosophy?
We focus on skill mastery, basketball IQ, competitive mindset, and character development. Practices are demanding but positive. We push players to grow while creating an environment where mistakes are learning opportunities.
Will my player get equal playing time?
Playing time is earned through effort, improvement, and performance. We’re honest with players about their role and what they need to do to earn more minutes. Development sometimes means embracing a role before earning a bigger one.

Other FAQs

Where are practices held?
Practice locations vary by team and chapter. Specific facility information is provided upon team placement. Most practices are at local high school gyms or recreation centers.
Are parents required to volunteer?
Parent involvement is appreciated but not required. Opportunities include tournament logistics, team communication, fundraising, and travel coordination. We have team parent coordinators who organize volunteer efforts.
What's the refund policy if my player gets injured or can't continue?
We understand that unexpected situations arise. Please contact admin@rain-basketball.com to discuss your circumstances. We review each case individually and work with families to reach a fair resolution based on timing and situation.
