5 Things Denver Parents Want to Know Before Signing Their Kid Up for Basketball Camp

Jun 12, 2026 | Spotlight Articles, Summer Camps

If your kid has never done a week-long basketball camp before, it helps to know what you’re actually signing them up for. Here’s a real look at what camp week at OC Rain Basketball looks like, from Monday morning drop-off to Friday’s final scrimmage.

Youth Basketball Summer Camps in Orange County OC, Inland Empire, Denver and Aurora Colorado.

Our Mission

Developing confident athletes and strong leaders through elite basketball training, competitive play, and character-building experiences that prepare them for success on and off the court.

1. My kid has never played organized basketball. Is this camp for them?

Yes, genuinely. Denver Rain Basketball camp is open to all skill levels, and that’s not just language. Coaches are trained to work across a wide range of development stages simultaneously. A kid who has never dribbled with purpose is going to get different instruction than a kid who plays AAU travel ball, and both are going to be pushed at their own level.

Some of the biggest transformations coaches see all summer happen with first-timers. The kid who walks in on Monday not knowing where to stand is the same kid who’s making decisions in Friday’s scrimmage. That arc happens more often than most parents expect when they sign up.

2. Who is actually coaching?

Every coach at Denver Rain Basketball camp holds USA Basketball Gold licensure, the highest coaching certification available in youth basketball. The staff averages 12 or more years of coaching experience. These aren’t volunteers or college kids picking up summer work. They’re experienced coaches who know how to run a structured developmental program.

Mario West is the guest coach for Denver camp. Mario is a former NBA player who spent time with the Atlanta Hawks and built his career at the highest level of the sport. He’s on the court all week, not as a figurehead but as an active coach working directly with your kid.

3. What does a typical day at camp actually look like?

Camp runs Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Christ the King in the Denver metro. Each morning follows a structured curriculum: ball handling progressions, footwork and movement, shooting mechanics, defensive positioning, and game-situation decision-making. The sessions build on each other across the week.

It’s not free play with occasional instruction. It’s four hours of structured, high-energy coaching with scrimmage time built in. Kids from Centennial and Westminster who have done other camps in the area regularly say it moves faster and pushes harder. In a good way.

“Such high energy! I loved seeing the enthusiasm of the staff, since it really got the other kids and my son pumped up and excited to play and have fun. He came out of the camp with new moves.” — Denver Rain Basketball parent

4. Are the camps co-ed?

Yes. Boys and girls train together at Denver Rain Basketball summer camp. The program has served both since it launched in the Denver metro and the coaching staff is experienced with co-ed instruction. Girls are coached at the same level of intensity and with the same access to Mario West and the full staff as everyone else.

Parents of daughters who have come through Denver camp are consistently vocal about this. The program doesn’t treat girls as an afterthought. The development is real across the board.

5. How do we know if it’s worth it?

The most honest answer is: look at who comes back. Denver Rain Basketball has families from Aurora and Lakewood and Englewood who started with a single camp week and have been part of the program ever since. Kids who showed up as nervous first-timers are now on year-round teams. That return rate means something.

Five mornings. Real coaches. A former NBA player on the court. The investment is modest for what actually happens during the week.
